This new video is about peanut allergies and draws inspiration from Blind Spots by Dr. Marty Makary. His insights resonate deeply with me as a functional medicine family doctor. He opens the book with a striking example of blind spots in medicine: peanut allergies.
Back in 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that children under the age of 3 avoid peanuts, based on flawed research and assumptions. The result? An epidemic of peanut allergies followed. By 2015, new research revealed that exposing infants to peanuts actually reduced peanut allergies by an incredible 86%. Yet it wasn’t until 2017 that the Academy updated its guidelines.
This highlights an important concept called immune tolerance. To help their immune systems develop properly, children need early exposure to a variety of germs and allergens. It’s a powerful reminder to question assumptions and follow the evolving science.
