Supplements to reduce anxiety
First, there’s a lot more to treating anxiety than just another pill, whether prescription or supplement. Get enough exercise, get enough sleep, and make sure you’re eating right.
Your brain has excitatory neurotransmitters that amp you up: adrenaline, fight or flight. But if there’s too much of it, it can push us towards anxiety. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have inhibitory neurotransmitters like GABA that reduce anxiety by dampening the excitatory signals.
Glycine is an amino acid that works as an inhibitory neurotransmitter to calm the brain down and lessen anxiety. I like glycine as a powder or capsule, and you can also take glycine to help gradually come off other medications.
L-theanine is also an amino acid, it promotes relaxation and reduces stress by increasing levels of calming neurotransmitters such as GABA.
I have had great success with my patients on Glycine and L-Theanine to help lessen anxiety and increase calm.
