Let’s talk about the new mRNA vaccine for RSV—Respiratory Syncytial Virus.
RSV is actually the third leading cause of hospitalization from respiratory illness in the U.S., right after flu and COVID.
The new RSV vaccine is called AREXVY, and yes—it uses that same mRNA spike protein technology we talked about earlier.
So, who really needs it?
If you’re between 60 and 74, generally healthy, and have no chronic conditions, I would say you likely don’t need the RSV vaccine.
But if you’re 75 or older, live in a shared community setting like assisted living or a nursing home, or you have pre-existing conditions—like chronic lung disease (COPD, asthma), heart issues, kidney problems, or are undergoing cancer treatment—then yes, you are at higher risk, and I do recommend the RSV vaccine in those cases.
As always, individualized care is key. Ask your provider what’s right for you.
